European Mathematical Council (EMC) vznikl v  roce 1978 jako neformální sdružení evropských národních matematických společností. V průběhu let se postupně rozvíjely nejrůznější aktivity podporující spolupráci evropských matematiků. V rámci EMC bylo na začátku roku 1989 vytvořeno také Publication Committee, v němž Matematická vědecká  sekce Jednoty československých matematiků a fyziků získala své zastoupení. Práce Publication Committee se mj. soustředila na přípravu bulletinu vytvářející se European Mathematical Society (EMS) a na úvahy o vydávání evropského matematického časopisu.

European Mathematical Society  byla založena v říjnu 1990 a po jejím konstituování  bylo rozhodnuto o vydávání European Mathematical Society Newsletter. Redakce  působila do roku 1996 v Southamptonu a v Praze, pak v Glasgow, od roku 1999 v Milton Keynes, od roku 2003 v Aalborgu a od roku 2008 v Madridu. První číslo vyšlo v září 1991, ročně se  od té doby objevují vždy 4 čísla, a to počátkem března, června, září a prosince.

Po dosti náročných jednáních se podařilo do Newsletteru prosadit pravidelnou rubriku Brief Reviews (od roku 1999 nazvanou Recent Books) redigovanou na Matematicko-fyzikální fakultě Univerzity Karlovy. První recenze byly uveřejněny v roce 1992, recenze budou ve stávajícím formátu vycházet do konce roku 2009. Knihy získané recenzní činností zajišťovanou matematiky z MFF UK, MÚ AV ČR a dalších institucí jsou matematické komunitě k dispozici v karlínské části knihovny MFF UK.

Od roku 1992 do ukončení činnosti v letošním roce byly redakci Brief Reviews/Recent Books k recenzi zaslány celkem 2 764 knihy (některé ve dvou exemplářích), jejichž přepočtená hodnota odpovídá více než 5 767 tisíc Kč. Pro zajímavost uvádíme (v závorce) počet recenzovaných knih v jednotlivých letech: 1992 (26),  1993 (84), 1994 (121), 1995 (118), 1996 (150), 1997 (163), 1998 (176), 1999 (159),  2000 (159), 2001 (184), 2002 (179), 2003 (188), 2004 (175), 2005 (171), 2006 (167), 2007 (147), 2008 (152), 2009 (202).

Na vypracování recenzí v letech 2007-2009 se podílelo 101 recenzentů, jejichž jména jsou uvedena na následující stránce. Jim všem patří upřímný dík za práci, kterou ochotně recenzím věnovali. Technické a administrativní úkoly důležité pro chod redakce Brief Reviews/Recent Books zajišťovala v letech 1992-1998 paní Věra Ferstlová, od roku 1998 se této role ujala Mgr. Anna Najmanová. Oběma patří naše poděkování za zodpovědnou práci. V další části textu je uveden abecední seznam knih, jejichž recenze vyšly nebo vyjdou v letech 2007-2009.
